Nosy Skua
With a bent neck and one cheeky eye to the sky, the great skua is constantly observing the skies above its nest. If anyone comes too close, the predator will spread to its full wing span of up to 140 cm, and cry out at the possible invader. Great Skuas are fierce opponents, they do not fear humans coming close to their nests, or any other competition. The way of the skua, is the way of a fierce warrior. Their strategy is to harass other birds like Northern Gannets so that they let go of their food and snatch it from them, but they do not shy out from preying on smaller birds like the Atlantic Puffin.
Great Skuas can be observed from a distance while they nest in the deep grass on top of islands. Due to the fact that they don’t fear humans, they can also be quite nonchalant in approaching everything that seems of interest to them, for example photo equipment.
The only ones that really can make their bones shake with fear are the way bigger and with deadly talons equipped Golden Eagle and White-Tailed Eagle.
The end of May is a beautiful time to visit the island of Runde. I organize 1on1 workshops and weekend workshops and help you to creatively reach your goals. Puffin portraits are very common outcomes when visiting Runde, with me you will get a great number of different photo opportunities beyond that.
